What a great list of movies!

Captain, this might help you with your list of 100 Best Movies to get through. Fill up that DVR!

TCM has been doing this for years now. I remember being in film school and staying up all night watching old movies (and missing my eight o'clock class). I've probably got dozens of videotapes of movies I recorded when I was in class or working so I could watch them later.

What are these "videotapes" you speak of?
  • daddyjason · 1 year ago
Mike, you know them as Betamax...those are the things you keep next to the HD DVDs...

I still am baffled by you guys and the supposed uselessness of these HD-DVDs...

Right now, Amazon has a $14.95 sale on all of their HD-DVDs and considering a combo drive down the road will play them forever, why wait to spend $26 on the Blu-Ray version down the road?

Flashback to the early '80s and substitute a few words:

Must have been a lot of conversations like this one once...

Yeah, but VHS and Beta looked a lot different right? It's not like a VCR with VHS could play both.

Are you saying that my chances of finding an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo are slim?
  • daddyjason · 1 year ago
Someone might make one, but for the price you'll have to pay for it you'd probably be able to replace all your HD DVDs with blu-rays...if you stop buying them...

Mo, why would any company put in multiple laser readers to play obsolete HD-DVD's (1 for Blu-ray, 1 for reg. DVD's, and one for HD-DVD)? Eventually, even regular ole DVD lasers wont be installed in players anymore (aka floppy drives or 3.5 drives not installed on pc's anymore), you can reduce cost by not providing for it, especially for a very brief time frame HD-DVD technology were on the market, hence you have coasters, ya know, frisbies for Riley and Charlie, shiny stuff you can marvel at on a sunny day...

    :(

So I guess I need to make a trip to Ebay...
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Well, you dont have to off any of your replaceable gear yet, but I wouldnt invest in more coasters.

@Mike - hey, they are cheap, not because it is a sale, they are dumping stock...
