With pretty much all of the weaker competition now out of the running, the contestants have no choice but to step up their game if they want to stay alive. This week was Inspirational ... • Crazy - we are consistently in agreement on the top 2 and always differ after that.

  • Jason rocked last night, so glad he finally broke out like that.

And I have to give props to Kristy, that song almost gave me goose bumps...well done.

Also, where does Paula's cleavage rank in the Top 8?
  • @Ape - Yeah, it's starting to get weird. But you had Brooke at three so we weren't even close on that.

    @Mike - I give Paula's cleavage a 4 - well, two 4's.
  • I must have bumped my head, I seriously thought Jasons performance of Over the Rainbow was bor-ring. In fact, it was worse than how Iz performs it. Jason doesnt sing his songs, he sort of talks through them. He doesnt sing them like the other contestants (David Cook). I dunno, I bet its only me, but he was the second worst of the night.
Also, Archuletta sings the same type of song, he has yet to show his range. He always sings the slow ballads...ok we get it, you can sing those, if its a talent competition he should show another range (like the others do), but he will still win overall cause of the girlie bopper vote.
Worst of the night was Brooke, and shes the one who will leave. She had the flat out no confidence singing and looked as if she was going to have a total breakdown the eintrie time, it shows on her and her singing and she will be leaving us Thursday.
  • Well, Cap'n, I agree that Brooke is in some serious danger tonight. However, I think Carly will be the one that goes instead. Carly is less likable and her song appeals to a smaller audience.

I obviously disagree about Jason Castro.

I think you have a good point about David A. Normally, I'd suggest that he take some chances and show us more of what he's got. But at this point, he'd actually be kind of stupid to take a chance and stray too far from what he's been doing. As it is, he's on the fast lane to the finals. Why mess with that?
  • Yeah Brooke or Carly could be close, will be interesting to see how it plays out, I think lack of cionfidence showed too much for Brooke, though your assessment of Carly was spot on as well.

I know there are a ton of Jason fans out there, heck I'm one of em!!!... oh wait.. Jason Castro fans I mean, yeah, he's ok, he has certain songs he does really well but falls into the Archuletta syndrome, I would like to see ihm sing an upbeat rock the house get everyone on your feet song, then I would change my opinion.

You are probably right with Archuletta not branching out at this point, and maybe that what vaults Cook into the lead becuase he does. I'm still pulling for Johns myself, but I can see him making top 3 at least...

Its coming down to the wire!
  • Okay first of all, the version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow that Jason sang is one of my all-time favorite songs. Kudos, Jason!

    Other thoughts...

    - I hated Carly's pants; they made her butt look massive.
    - David Cook did fine with the higher notes in that song, but the lower stuff, especially at the beginning, was really bad.
    - Brooke looks like she is having less and less fun each week. I am a sucker for any James Taylor song, but she looked scared.
    - Syesha, we make fun of those cheesy AI finale songs, and that's what she picked! Wow!
  • @ Cap'n - Jason? Boring? Dude, you were bumped on the head. He did a great job.

I would agree that Carly could be in some trouble after last night - not good enough at all. However, I still think Kristy will make the bottom three and might be the one to go. Just because she had a phenomenal night last night does not quite make up for the previous weeks atrocious performances. I hope she made herself another sign.

  • Cap'n, that Over the Rainbow song by Iz is flat out awesome...yeah, it's mellow and all, but it's still a fantastic song...and Jason did a top-notch job on it.
  • no no, dont get me wrong... Iz's version of Over The Rainbow, is awesome, I totally LOVE that version of the song. I thought Jasons boy Jason, did a worse performance of it, and because he did a worse perfomrance, it seemed like any other performance and his version was boring. The judges are funny, they compare some singers to the orignal singers (Fantasia and Whitney Houston), but they dont any others, its wierd how they do it. I know the Jason lovers disagree, but someone has to be right :P
  • @ Mike - ditto.

  • Gotta side with the Cap'n on this one, Jason's songs are getting more boring by the week (maybe I got bumped in the head too). He took a great song and just regurgitated it, nothing new, nothing fresh. But that's his MO, he does basically the same thing every week. I keep picturing him singing outside a subway station with his guitar case and people throwing quarters into it.

Same is true of David A; same thing week in week out. Only David Cook seems to be pushing any boundries. His performance this week wasn't his best, but I liked it alot better than some of the others.

My bottom 3, Brooke, Syesha, Carly, or Kristy Lee. But if Jason or David A drop in I'll be happy too.

  • Castro did do a little something different with it... He went high a couple of times that actually worked quite nicely. The original version is classic, but Jason's wasn't weak in my opinion.
  • We are pretty close again and our bottom performers are identical. It pained me greatly to put David Cook so low. But he deserved it this week.

I actually have Kristy 2nd overall, yeah I know, and she was almost top because of David A's seemingly safe performance. Still he was solid as usual and it's hard not to reward consistency.

Looks like we will remain tied at least another week.
  • @Jeff - I guess we think too much alike to have a contest like this. Then again, I'm sure I'll pull ahead as we get closer to the finale.
  • {in the voice of Darth Sidius} "Your faith in your friends (Jason Castro) will be your undoing.."
  • @ Cap'n - lol

  • I can see how one might put Jason Castro and David A in the same boat as far as how they sing their same style every single week and never really go out on a limb. That's a fair comparison. I like Jason better...but that's just me.

I don't think that Jason's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was exactly like the Iz version. I think Jason made some subtle changes that fit his style a little more and it worked really well.

David Cook's performance this week was a disaster. A glorious failure for sure...but a failure nonetheless.
  • I totally agree with you this week Jason. Even though it bugs me to see Kristy Lee do well in yet another sequined shirt. And my fave David Cook picked a weird song. But like you said, I'm still glad he takes chances and puts on an actual performance every week. David A. is getting more annoying to me every week too. Does he always have a cold or something b/c he always seems congested during the interviews. Anyone else notice that? And Paula's dress looked painful. I physically hurt looking at her!

    nicky's last blog post..It's a ?
  • I don't like this comparison between Jason and David A.

David A...he's like a kid singing in a musical for Disney or something, but Jason is more independent, something different.

I dunno, I just don't see Jason as boring like I do David A.
  • I think the truth is that they are all decent singers (just reference some truly painful contestants in the Top 12 from previous seasons).

I also find that I want the ones that I don't really like their style to be the ones to shake it up a bit. But honestly, they all have a niche and are playing to it. It's kind of like watching Survivor season after season and noticing how the game gets played differently as people start to figure out the strategies!
  • I have to agree with Jina completely. I too find myself wanting the shake-ups to come from the contestants whose styles I don't really care for (David A) much more than those whose style I like (Jason C).

However, as much as I would like to see David do something different (and yes, he does sound like a cold and he does sound nasally), I think David A should probably keep doing what he's doing (as I mentioned previously) while Jason C needs to shake it up if he wants to have a chance at winning.
  • I agree with your list of the performances last night.

I thought Jason's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" was top notch. I loved it. It fits his style and everything. It may not be quiet as good as the original, but I want these contestants to do different things with their songs, so they don't sound like they are just copying someone else. I was sad for Chris who just couldn't get the low notes and I couldn't recognize the song at all. That was unfortunate. I expect much better from him. Michael Johns was better then Chris this time with his Aerosmith song. Carly Smithson had such a good opportunity with her song choice, I mean how can you beat Queen? I was so sad she lost it at the end. Maybe she bit off more then she could chew. The beginning was really good and I loved it, but the end was awful. The rest of the contestants I couldn't stand.
