Pop Critics: AML Movie Review: “Stardust” (2007)

I thought this could have been a really great children's film. In fact, it would have been one of the best films of the year if not for one thing. The Robert De Niro character. I don't want to say too much for those who haven't seen it, but I found some of his scenes to be completely inappropriate for children. Now, maybe I'm old fashioned or too prudish or something, but I would have been upset if I had taken my kids to see this movie and they had seen those scenes. I thought he was funny and I, as an adult, laughed, but it's not something I felt was good for a kids flick.

And I think that was the problem with the movie. The Princess Bride was appropriate for all ages because anything that might not be appropriate was done in such a way as to be over the heads of younger kids. It was just fun and imaginative. This movie could have done the same thing, but they chose to go for cheap laughs and it hurt the film in the long run.

I can see what you are saying, but I didn't think that minor flaw ruined the rest of the movie...

I did laugh like you did, although I'm not sure I would have thought it was a kid's movie, but I guess it could have been.

I just saw the film and thoroughly loved it. Michelle Pfeiffer was the perfect evil villain and Clair Danes was the perfect picture of innocence and light.

My kids watched the movie with me. We all loved it.
Compared to all the other adult innuendo out there in children's movies like 'The Cat In The Hat' and the cat's comments about his balls etc, I considered it pretty tame. Maybe you forget, our children get glimpses of really questionable stuff all the time. They play 'Saw' trailers on prime time, for instance. I find that much worse.

It's definitely true that kids see much worse. My point was simply that the filmmakers could have created a timeless, completely innocent, fairytale film that would have appealed to everyone of all ages for many years to come, but instead decided to add unnecessary elements that resulted in cheap laughs but ultimately resulted in the film being less of what it could have been. I just thought it was beneath the rest of the film. I'll be showing "The Princess Bride" to my daughter instead of this film.
