Pop Critics: Comic Book/Graphic Novel Recommendations

  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
    Some of these are obvious:
    V for Vendetta
    Watchmen
    Sandman
Earth X (I haven't read the two followup books, but I heard they dropped in quality)
    The Dark Knight
    The Killing Joke
Supreme (only Alan Moore's reboot, which is *awesome*, not Rob Liefeld's stuff)
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Supreme GREAT CHOICE!!! Watchmen I just finished (loooooooooooooong read, not sure how thats gonna translate to a movie), Dark Knight REALLY GOOD ....really really. I'm thinking I have touted before Civil War, but what I think was underrated was Annihiliation, really good stuff. As complex the DC universe is the Crisis on Infinite Earths and of course Infinite Crisis, recent ones would be House of M, Sinestro Corps. from Batman you would have to include Hush in that (which we have mentioned)... I need to think more ....
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Can I recommend Kingdom Come? :)

Y: The Last Man is also fantastic, even if I haven't finished it yet.
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Both excellent picks. Did you finish KC yet? And if you did, did you read Alan Moore's proposal for Twilight of the Superheroes online?
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Yeah, finished KC awhile ago, but felt it was a bit too far above my head to write a review for it. These huge, epic comics that involve characters that you SHOULD know about aren't things I feel comfortable reviewing.

That's why I'm liking YTLM and Kick-Ass, because they are new universes to everyone.

I started to read the Twilight proposal and then looked at how long that was, so I dozed off, lol.

But I DO want to go back and finish :)
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
LOL! Yah, it's a long proposal. But it's juicy.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Stick with Kick-ass you wont be disappointed, its very well written... keeps you involved
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Oh I wont be giving it up.

I just finished the first two issues of 1985...so that was interesting.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
1985... the Year the Cap'n graduated from High Scool... you all do the math...
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
    Wow man. You're like, old.

Back when I was a junior in high school, you know what we used to call people that old? Seniors.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
LOL....Ahhhh. I do love having senality..... or is that seniority.. I cant recall..
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
    Dang, you are old...holy crap.

Diane and I were trying to remember just how much older you were...so that's
    about 8 years. 41 huh?

    Yowsers :)
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
No sir, The Cap'n is... (in the immortal words of Jason) wait for it... 40, and will be 41 this coming July 18th (Dark Knight opener what a B-Day treat for the Capn!!!)
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
OMG! We may need to all get-together to see this.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Put me down.... who's coming with us?!?!? Who's coming with us?!?!?! DOROTHY BOYD IN ACCOUNTING, Thank You!
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
The gratuitous Jerry Maguire ref earns the Cap'n a point!
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
    Alex Ross!!! Good stuff...
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Booyah! Amazon just showed up at my door with Y: The Last Man volume 10!

I know what I'm reading this weekend!
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
    Awesome!
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Porter, why did you have to wait so long for it? I thought it's been out for
awhile? I saw it at Atomic Comics on Monday??
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Dunno. Sometimes the Amazon pre-orders ship a little later.

Don't mention Atomic...most weeks I've got little or nothing to pick up. This week, my box is going to be overflowing. Hopefully I get over there tonight.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Depending which one you get to they are having Supreme (ha ,like the tie-in?!?!) issues. I go last weekend give my box #, they hand me a stck of crap. I said "Uuummm you get the right box #?" s The cofused help behind the counter said "Tsk, sigh, yes... I'm sure" I said "Any chance dentists loaded the boxes this last Tuesday as 7 out of 10 books were wrong". 70% they gave me were not on my list, AND they didnt give me what was supposed to be on my list. Its why I ALWAYS go back manually and review what is out and what should be handed to me.
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Man, my box has been wrong so many times it's not even funny. Hasn't happened in a few months - knock wood - because I've complained enough that a couple of the regulars seem to take a second pass at it. But I still double check every week.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Someone explain to me precisely how these "boxes" work.

Do you just sign up for titles and they toss them in boxes for you that you pick up whenever?
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Yeah, with Atomic, you give them a $20 deposit and then fill out a pull list. Then your regular comics will get pulled and put in. I did it initially because I was tired of showing up to get a comic I wanted on Wednesday but they hadn't ordered more than one for the wall. Box holders get filled (are supposed to get filled) first, then the wall.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Awesome, I may have to start that, although my box would be tiny right now.
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
There's a crude sexual joke I could insert here, but your box is tiny and it might hurt.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
OMG, you just reminded me of the joke from Hancock!

Hancock says to kick the bully in the nuts...

"So that's all he has left is a flap to keep the dust out of his ass."

    ROTFL!
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO! GOLDEN LAUGH OF THE DAY RIGHT THERE!!!
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Pretty much. The idea of boxes is simply to guarantee you get XYZ issue. So you get 1st prints and such which will get you $$$ if you pick the right ones later (i.e. first print IronFist, GreenArrow, etc.) also it ensures when you tag a particular seires you want to follow, they add in all the crossovers as well so you dont have to manually track them all down, well thats how its supposed to work)
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
You really suck at the nested reply stuff :)
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Look man, I'm with Ape, I need a picture or diagram to show me how it works!!
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
Or, you have a weird pull list like mine with only one or two of the less popular DC/Marvel titles (Iron Fist, Herc, Blue Beetle) and no crossovers. Plus lots of the middle-tier and small publishers like Dark Horse and Avatar. Gotta tell you, since I don't usually check Diamond's list before I go in, there have been weeks I've gone in and had 0 comics in my box.

Then there are weeks like this one.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
What if you don't want something in your box?

Also, how do the crossovers work? Explain that to me? It's automatic?
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
You don't get charged until you pick up the comics, so you can always have them put something they pulled back up on the wall. Of course, if you do that a lot, you should probably just have the title removed from your pull list.

    I don't do the crossovers. Cap'n?
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Cap'n does crossovers... some extensively Civil War, World War Hulk, others not so much, The Initiative , I dont get every single book cause there is only so much Ms. Marvel I can take.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
You can select anything you want in your list or dont here a perfect example. Civil War. Besides the graphic Novel you read there were a TON of side stories that crossed over into heroes regular comic stories. It affected the ENTIRE Marvel universe. So if you want to know every detail (and be a pro like the Capn and RA) then you get Punisher War Journal added to your list, and you find out Cap America trained ole Punisher and how he respected Cap and a ton of other things that fill in a million blanks. but if the Punisher is boring, you tell them you dont want that cross over. Some cross overs are stoopid and they do it just to promote a book, like Heroes For Hire, really not much relevance to Civil War save 30 seconds, but they continually tagged it as a cross over so you would buy it. But I offed it cause it didnt affect the story ... much.

Havent read comics in awhile, but Deus Ex Machina while I read it was good, as was Sleeper. Geoff Johns run on the Flash very good. uhhh Little Lulu underated.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh its time to let it be known the Capns favorite Hero (well its a dead tie with Nova)... The Flash... Mark Waid did a STELLAR job with ole Wally West, and Johns did not disappoint in taking over the helm. Unfortunately, The Flash today is written by neither author and the story line BLOWS (makes extensive use of Wally's kids, really do we have to read about it... pah-leaseeeee make it stop).
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Ex Machina IS supposed to be good, it's by Brian K. Vaughan or something, who did Y: The Last Man.

He has something new coming out soon that he's been hush-hush about, which I was going to write about.
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
100 Bullets is supposed to be excellent. (I haven't read it yet)
    I also haven't read the much-praised Fables. That's embarrassing.

Rising Stars from JMS is also great.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
ohhh yeah 100 bulletts how'd I miss it.... very good, very very good...
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
Ultimate Power series is an Awesome take on the Marvel universe from the Ultimates persepective. I guess one of my favorite non Marvel or DC titles is Black Summer.....
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
For anyone who hasn't been following Black Summer, don't read this comment!

    SPOILER ALERT!!!

I'm still convinced that Tom Noir not only hacked the tank to fire, but that he actually faked his own death. He's going to show up in the final book and kill John Horus. That's been my theory since he "died". I'm sticking with it until I'm finally proven wrong.
  • Cap'n Schwartz · 1 year ago
That an interesting take..... clearly in the world of comics you have to wonder, Dead or showing up in a frame later... but when...? I never thought about the hack tho...
  • R.A. Porter · 1 year ago
If you can find one - or be super-gentle with my copy - I also recommend Tales from the Bully Pulpit. It's...awe inspiring.

Here's Chris Sims' on this greatest of achievements of the comic art.
