Get a pen... I'll wait...
Done yet? ... ok...
You want to get a PS3. Why do you ask? Well mainly you need a Blu-Ray player that has a Firmware profile of 2.0 or later.... to save explanation of firmware, read this...

PS3's is the ONLY current Blu-ray on the market now that has this feature and is 2.0 compliant. AND you will be able to play games (that Jr. is going to want to play later...)
Listen to the Cap'n...if you are buying now, get a PS3...
My problem is, I sold the 360 because I never played it...
And by the time my kid is old enough to play it, wont there be like Playstation 10???
I bought the Panasonic DMP-BD30K player (profile 1.1). It does not have the internet port (I upgrade my firmware via disc), so I can't get 2.0 on mine. However, it is a super-solid player and I love it.

And , it will have some games you will want to play, its a good activity when you monitor it, that you can play with with the family. Its 2 products in one, and the only one with current complatible firmware. I dont blame you for not playing your X-box, those games blow =) , on PS3 you can buy NBA game and re-enact Duncan attemtping that 3 pointer again to see if he can hit it again... PS3 my friend...
let me help you here...
Microsfot backed a lost technology HD-DVD, and they want to rule the world pretty. the day bill gates can explain to me why his powerpoint application redraws lines on my presentation slide that i didnt tell it to do when making a text change, then I'll promote his x-box, otherwise, I'd take the worldly popular, getting in the mix PS3 game making blu-ray playing machine!!!
P.S Stoopid Spurs...
Get the 40GB version of the PS3 like I did. It's silent too. You will save $50. But you will need the remote($25 at Walmart for the true PS3 remote not the fake at $20) unless you don't mind using the controller.
A part from the game, it starting to be a good multimedia machine(DivX, Xvid, WMV, MP3...). Sony talk about a 10 year life cycle for it. Yes, a PS4-5 will exist by then. But jr will be able to play games and they will be cheaper too.
Half-Life 2 in the $5 bin ;)

I plan to get a PS3 with my tax rebate, with full awareness that I'm unlikely to get any games for a long while since I have a 360. But, 5 years down the line, who knows? The PS3 will still cost the same (more or less) and hold it's value (more or less), but if you buy a stand alone Blu-Ray Player, in 5 years they're probably going to be worth $50.
My opinion, anyway.
So with that, happy hunting in the Blu-Ray department.
