Lost recap, episode 4×06: ‘The Other Woman’

Started by Mike Olbinski · 10 months ago

So here I type, waiting for my wife to finish up watching an old The O.C. repeat so that we can start watching Lost. If I haven’t mentioned it before, I frakking LOVE Thursday nights.
As I sit prepping this blog, I am wondering how on earth The Other Woman can live up to last wee ... Continue reading »

  • Just a small thing--Juliet was crying when she first met Goodwin because one of the pregnant women died that same morning--Goodwin mentioned it when he met her.
  • Yeah, I kind of said that, but in a more general sense:

"Juliette is crying, likely cause she's just lonely and unable to help these women stop dying."

I think she was obviously crying over the woman who died, but she may have been lonely because of it all too, which made the thing with Goodwin seem so easy to walk into.
  • What if the person on the boat wasn't Michael? What if it were somehow Libby? She's supposed to be back this season... Just an "out-of-the-box" thought.

Good recap. I think the way you outlined it was a much easier way to follow the story.
  • Sometimes the story lends itself to being a back and forth thing, cause it's important to the flow...but last night, the Juliette/Goodwin thing was sort of a story that could have been told all on it's own.

Man...if Libby is the one...that would be wild.
  • Wait, I don't think it can be Libby...she's the one who sold Desmond the boat, who we assume was working for Widmore...

So she can't really be a spy, could she?
  • Hey, we got to see Mr. Tom Friendly again! And the long lamented Picket also got a mention but no screen time.

Kate is getting a bad case of getting her butt kicked. Juliet kung-fu'ed her last season and Charlotte "Scooby-do'ed" and pistol whipped her in this episode.

I think Harper wasn't Harper but a manifestation of Smokey/Jacob/Island. Look at how quickly she disappeared.

I think the point of what Daniel and Charlotte did was to remove Ben's MAD (mutually assured destruction) option.

Juliet still is a bit of an enigma. Did Goodwin give her kungfu lessons between "wine tastings". Where exactly does she stand? How big a hold does Ben really have over her?

Ben is just plain creepy, and powerful, and dangerous, and crazy. But, so is Widmore for than matter. Maybe the Island wants a new chief honcho, Locke?

I agree, Micheal is most likely the insider on the freighter.

  • I believe I called Michael as the inside guy on the ship a long time ago and everyone thought I was crazy. Now everyone is like, "hey, it might be Michael"...but I'm not bitter. :)

I don't think that this episode was nearly as good as last weeks. Nothing super surprising happened. Don't get me wrong, it was still good, just not in a Desmond/Penny kind of way. Those tend to be the strongest episodes.

  • It was definitely an average episode in comparison to last weeks, but not bad none the less, I mean this is Lost. I really think the writers are thoroughly enjoying themselves. There was a lot of trickery in this episode, like Mike said it started with The Julliete therapy session of being a celebrity, which any true lost fan is either wondering a.) she's on the island, or b.) she somehow sneaked her name on the manifest and is one of the Ocaenic 6 which would be a disappointment.
Also when Fahrety is typing on the computer to render the gas inert, if you can pause the screen, you'll notice it is all babel, and even includes some cuss words. I think that might be there message to the lost fans who give away spoilers to screw off. P.S. There is a guy who does a YouTube Recap of every Lost episode at least for season 4, and he finds some ridiculous hidden clues when he does it. Almost every episode there has been what appears ro be someone mumbling, but when played backwards it is actually a message to the fans from the writers. Frikkin Crazy.

Any way, I have a couple of theories, I know next episode focuses on Jin and Cho, and because of that I have a strange feeling that the writers are trying to trick us into believing that they are the final 2 of the Oceanic 6. I predict Cho doesn't make it, thus leading to more guilt on Jack. I have a funny feeling that Sawyer will find a way to leave, even though he said he wants to stay. I just don't see Sawyer having a very good time on the island without Hugo or Kate. Who knows, maybe its Michael and Walt.
  • @ Zach - Probably need to re-check your math. There is only one spot left for the Oceanic 6 - so both Jin and Sun cannot be part of the group.

    Oceanic 6:
    1. Jack
    2. Kate
    3. Hurley
    4. Sayid
    5. Aaron
    6. ???

At least that is how I have it counted. If there is eight like Jack mentioned, then I include:

    7. Michael
    8. Walt

  • I know what your saying, but the lost writers have openly commented that the Oceanic 6 is more like 6 + 1. Also if you geta chance to watch the eggtown episode. There is a clue at the very end. When Kate walks into Aaron's bedroom, there is a picture to the right of her. On the bottom of the picture there is a guy holding up a playing card. It is a 7 of diamonds or hearts not sure. Anyway, there is a thumb covering up the 7th diamond on the card. I think this indicates that there are 7 and Aaron is the 7th. Remember he is not on the manifest, because Claire gave birth to him on the island.
  • Ape, get over yourself, it's probably not even Michael! :)
  • I don't think Aaron is part of the 6...makes no sense that he'd be a celebrity or anything.

    There are two spots left.
  • @ Zach - true, that explanation has possibilities
@ Mike - wait and see. I mean, look at the other things I have been write about, such as Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD...lol

  • In real life the media would never refer to the survivors as The Oceanic Six +1. They would be referring to everyone who came off the island whether they were from the plane or were born there. Whether that means there is one spot left or two I do not know, but it really doesn't make sense that they would be known as the Oceanic 6, but there's really seven of them.
  • Two things that I think are interesting are...

    1. Ben's freakout when he told Juliette that she was his. That is the only time we really have seen him rattled. Interesting. Maybe there is a chink in his armor.

    2. Harper said to Juliette in the therapy session that she looked just like "her", in reference to why of course Ben liked her. Who is this HER?
  • Could the "HER" be the little girl we saw in the first flashback we ever saw for Ben way back in Season 2? I can't remember whatever happened to that girl, but she was around a lot when Ben was a kid, but I don't remember seeing her at all when he became an adult and led the purge.
  • That's who I thought it was Chap.

  • Man, you guys have a better memory than I do! I barely remember that girl. Can't remember much at all about her.
  • I think her name was Susan or Sarah or something along those lines.

  • Yeah, I don't remember any of that stuff :)
  • Just think of how brilliant I am when I'm not hopped up on Percocet! :)

  • I think Annie was name of Ben's girlfriend when he was a wee lad. She gave him some wooden dolls for his birthday, which it later showed him looking at as an adult, so he still has some infatuation. Then kid Ben leaked the gas and killed everyone, but it never showed what happened to her.

Does anyone else feel like this whole season aside from being awesome, needs a little breather. Maybe a show where it shows everyone partying on the beach celebrating drinking Sweet Dharma wine, waiting for their rescue. Maybe even some random sex. We probably have a couple of episodes to go for that.
  • I'm probably over doing my posts, but now that I think about it, I bet this Annie girl is still alive, maybe even off the island, is a relative of someone, maybe even Widmore(sister?) She may be the basis for all of Ben's lunacy and could verywell explain the beginning of the whole Dharma project.

One thing that does seem clear to me, is that Widmore probably had everything to do with sending Desmond to that island away from his daughter, Penny. I'm done.
  • "Sweet Dharma wine" hahahahaha, keep it coming Zach, you aren't overdoing anything :)
  • Okay, so Widmore sends Desmond to the island, which I think we pretty much think is the case. Does he do it because he doesn't like him (to get him away from Penny) or to use Desmond in some way (if so, why Desmond and why not someone else?).

And we know that Penny knows about the island and is looking for Desmond. If her father is the one behind the whole thing...are they working together to find the island or is he allowing Penny to look on her own...do they even know each other is looking for the island?

I've probably missed some information that tells me all of this somewhere.
  • How about Penny and Annie being the same person? LOL

Widmore is former Dharma and wants revenge on Ben for gassing the place during the purge. Or perhaps Annie was another daughter he had. Gives him a motive to want Ben dead, doesn't it?
  • Did you notice the Philip K. Dick book that Ben was reading - Valis? I'm wondering if one of that book's major premises is being hinted at (or mis-hinted at?!) by the show's writers - earth/people's relationship to an alien race?
  • Yep - noticed it right away. That book is about a variety of philosophies and spiritualities, particularly the ancient philosophical/religious view of Gnosticism.

Philosophical and Spiritual overtones run rampant all throughout LOST.
