Movie Review: “Hancock” (2008)

Started by Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago

The moment I heard about Hancock and found out Will Smith was starring it, I’ve wanted to see this film. It looked funny, it had great stars in it and the superhero element was perfect.
That was pretty much the high point. As the release date grew closer and closer, the bad vibes started to rise within me. The news of re-shoots was akin to huge ... Continue reading »

  • Yeah, Jumper just didn't quite come together. I've been looking forward to this as just about anything with Will Smith is usually excellent, esp on the 4th of July weekend. Sounds like I can wait for the DVD version on this one tho.
  • Do you think this movie will really be a big hit? I am not sure. I usually wan't to see Will Smith's movies, but this one doesn't interest me. I am not sure why, there is something about the previews that don't appeal to me. But I will say the move does look like it would be entertaining and funny. It will be interesting to see what the box office draw is on Hancock. Scotty, you will have to tell us what you think about the movie if you see it this weekend. I would rather take a PC critics review of the movie rather then any other source.
  • Good call on the relying on a PC critics review :)

I mean, it's good summer fun, but just not up to the potential it could be.

Will it be a big hit? I think it will make a TON of cash this weekend, but likely drop off fast. People wont talk about how awesome it was. Heck, for a superhero movie, the special effects weren't that amazing. Iron Man, the Hulk, etc., all has monstrous special effects.

I also think the previews don't really give people a good idea on whether it's a comedy or a drama.
  • The Hulk had monsterous effects?!?! Youre funny and dont even know it...
  • That's where you're wrong.

    I KNOW I'm funny :)
  • Wheres Ape when we need him?!?!
  • Lurking in the jungle and getting ready to head to dinner and a Wall-E... :)

Can anyone say steak? It's what's for dinner.
  • No cause there is a beef recall...
  • Yeah - the place we planned on going to...ugh, no go. I don't care how much I like Filet Mignon, I'm not dropping $33 per steak on that, and no it wasn't Ruth's Chris (although I loooooove that place).

So we ended up eating at Red Brick Pizza - it was ok, but not even close to steak.

By the way - Wall-E was AWESOME!!!! Man, what a terrific movie.
  • Pizza works just as well!!
  • So did Will Smith carry the movie to be good and save it to the 6.5 rating?
  • Yeah, Will Smith is awesome of course, but it's not like his I Am Legend role. He was mostly grim the whole time, didn't have a TON of lines.

Without him, the movie probably wouldn't have even been made, lol. It's like it was made FOR HIM...he fits Hancock to a T.
  • Totally jazzed about this movie. I'll be catching it this weekend, but tonight I will be heading out on a date with the wife to see Wall-E.

    Woot!!!
  • I'm sure Wall-E is 1000 times better :)
  • Gonna find out. :)
  • Wall-E is our tommorow morning movie, Jason has me pumped to see this one...
  • Just got back from seeing Hancock. Overall a great, fun summer movie. It did get a little off track during the second half when it got a little serious, but overall Will Smith delivered. Plus Charlize Theron. WOOT!
  • I will agree with you, Charlize looked pretty good in this movie. Best I've seen her in awhile.
