New South F&$%$%^ Wales. It's in Australia, but apparently sucks so much it's equated to things you don't want other people to know, or something.

I don't see why people are angry with MNS. I find his movies fascinating. I think that his work get's' miss-marketed ever since Sixth Sense as a horror director. Each of his films is different, but all seem based on urban legends, which incidentally make for some fun story telling. For example:

    1. Sixth Sense = Horror/mystery/ghosts
    2. Unbreakable = Genetic polarity theory
    3. Signs = Crop circles.
    4. The Village = A period/romance piece.
    5. The Lady in the Water = a children's bedtime story or modern day myth.
    6. The Happening = not sure yet, but looks like the end of the word/Virus idea (like 28 days or RE).

These are basic descriptions, because I don't want to give away the movies in each case. Each time one of his movies comes out they are ALWAYS marketed as Horror.... and that is just dumb/deceptive. So people go see them for a horror flick and when it doesn't pan out and they get an urban ledged or good story, they are upset. It is all about perception/anticipation. When I go to his films I know this.

I've only seen the first 4, but after Sixth Sense the buildup overshadowed the twist at the end.
-Unbreakable could have been worse, but it was simply godawful boring and about the most plodding story you could imagine. The twist was ok, but I really didn't care at that point so it didn't much matter.
-Signs wasn't boring, but when the aliens showed up (both of them) it was kinda corny.
-The Village -- really, who couldn't see the twist coming before even halfway through the movie? Plus the idea of the blind girl heading off by herself...that's just stupid.
-Didn't see the Lady in Water.

Much like Jean Claude Van Damme, he peaked with his first movie. Unlike JCVD, his first movie was really good. He should have only been allowed to do episodes of The Twilight Zone or that other similar show after it. He could probably acceptably do 22 minute stories.

Unbreakable is my 2nd favorite M. Night movie, with Sixth Sense being #1.

Interesting Mike: If I were going to list my Favorite MNS movie down to my least, it would be:

    1. The Village
    2. Lady in the Water
    3. Signs
    4. Unbreakable
    5. The Sixth Sense.

I understand when people say they don't like his films, but I personally don't agree with them. I have yet to see The Happening and I think it looks a bit scary from the previews I have seen. What does everyone else think about the Happening?

@ Raven - So you are saying Sixth and Unbreakable are your least favorite? You liked Lady in the Water better than both?

I would give you the other two MAYBE, but Lady in the Water was just...ugh.

As far as The Happening, I haven't heard great buzz about it so far, but I'll go see it anyways.

I appreciate "Lady in the Water" because it is so different, a mythology based on a bed time story. "Watership Down" is also such a story, and a classic piece of literature. I found it fascinating he made this story into a movie. I love story telling and anything related to it. I am sure I have a much different option of these films then most people out there, which is why I wrote it down. It's alright. You also must know, all the MNS movies I have listed I adore. I like all of them, so even#5 on that list is a really good rating in my estimate, and does not mean I hated the "Sixth Sense". I just thing it was a nice starting point for MNS though.

I agree the storytelling was different, but it just didn't feel "great" to me.

    Never saw Watership Down.

I think you actually have to read Watership Down, not see it. :)

Aww...Raven. I just now am getting caught up on my blog reading and came across this article. Sorry I wasn't here to support ya! You know I totally agree with your assessment of his movies. "Sixth Sense" is my least favorite one too - and that is coming from a professed horror/thriller/ghost fanatic!!! I don't understand the hatred and disappointment people have had towards his films. Maybe our modern world is too cynical and jaded to appreciate a good fairy tale anymore... Oh well... guess we'll have to take our M. Night Shyamalan love-fest elsewhere. ;)
