Pop Critics: The Friday Question - The Office

  • The Trousered Ape · 1 year ago
Wow - there are too many to pin-point. I think mine comes from the same episode but it was with Todd Packer when he said "What's up ma'nerd?" - Oh man - that line is always funny!

Tough question. I am going to have to think about this one for a while.
  • Steven · 1 year ago
Very, very tough. I'll throw two out there: the Basketball episode from Season 1 and the Christmas episode when they go to Benihana. I also love the scene (can't remember which episode) when Jim makes an oversized identification badge for Dwight and lists his middle name as "fart."

Although I dont watch it, best clip I've seen is where Carrels charecter is tlaking about how much he loves black people and in fact for any white person anyone else could name, he would name a better black person...
A name gets thrown out (I dont recall which), but Carrell responded with "Please, Martin Luther King"...then someone yelled out "John Kennedy" (I think I once again dont recall the white persons name), Carrel replied with "Easy, Colin Powel!".. then someone yelled out "Jesus"... Carrel said "Apollo Creed"... instant classic.

I love when Jim and Pam start buying Dwight's desk accessories out of the vending machine. That's always been one of my favorites.

...so you're getting back together with Jan? yes, your argument was good, hers was bigger. rotfl

    Good one Scott!

Jina, that will always be a classic cold opening.
  • Kory · 1 year ago
@ Jina - that is definitely my favorite opening. Love it when they hand Dwight a bag of nickels.
  • The Trousered Ape · 1 year ago
@ Jina - that was great.
@ Cap'n - dude - you seriously need to get into this show and start watching it - it is sooo hilarious.
@ Scotty - that was very funny as well.

There are so many quotable lines in this show...

"My father's name was Dwight Shrute, my father's father's name was Dwight Shrute, his father's father's name was Dwide Shruude. It's Amish."

And of course when Jim comes in dressed and acting like Dwight.

The George Foreman Grill cold opening was hilarious. From Michael's description of what happened to him to Dwight crashing his car, throwing up on his car, then driving away in his car. I couldn't stop laughing.

I think my favorite moments aren't funny ones at all. Besides, you guys have all named some incredibly funny moments already. The common theme to all mine are Michael *not* being a tool or fool. It took me a long time to like the American version because I always saw Michael Scott as an idiot. Once I finally realized the moments were just less frequent, I finally warmed to the show.

    1. At the end of "Survivor Man" when Michael and Jim are sitting down having cake and Michael chuckles about Jim's "rookie mistake" of combining all the birthday parties. Jim thought he was being smarter than Michael, but obviously he wasn't.

    2. At the end of "Beach Games" on the bus where everyone is singing the theme to "The Flintstones". Everyone was having fun (well, maybe not Angela,) everyone was getting into it, and Michael's "WILMA!" yell at the end was perfect and perfectly appreciated.

    3. Every single time Michael nails a massive sale, surprising everyone else.

@ Porter - another good one with Michael in those types of situations is on the Booze Cruise where he is handcuffed outside and he and Jim have a talk about dating.

    Anything with Creed in it.

I particularly like an outtake from the Booze Cruise episode where Michael tries to play guitar with the boat's band and fails and Creed (who was a real life 60's rock guitarist) gets up an nails it.

I agree, there are funny moments and then great character moments, like Jim and Pam at the end of Casino Night, or on the boat during the Booz Cruise...

I liked the deleted scene with Stanley and Michael eating their pretzels, and Stanley says "That's what she said..." and they both laugh...great little moment.
  • Scotty Dub · 1 year ago
Anytime Michael has to force 'that's what she said' into a moment...and there are lots of them...is classic.

When he was doing the "that's what she said" during Jan's deposition at Dunder Mifflin's HQ was pretty funny. And it was funnier when they had the transcriber read it back...lol

My favorite moments from the "Dinner Party" were the tour of Jan & Michael's bedroom...ummm what's up with the video camera...mmmhmmm ;) and Dwight's dinner date and beet salad...so random & weird. My favorite recent quote from Dwight aka Rainn Wilson about American Idol "I'm sure all that drama and all those underdog stories are captivating but that MUSIC SUCKS!" I have to agree with him.
