There could be an entriley other reason he was cast....

If you are a trekker then you are aware of Fleet Admiral Cartwright from Star trek VI The Undiscovered country. Admiral cartwright who was the head of starfleet was black.

He could have been hired to play a younger version of Admiral Cartwright, and may have some resemblance to a young Brock Peters who played the since then departed Admiral.......
